Hackensack University Medical Center Announces Dr. Michael D. Stifelman as Chairman of the Department of Urology

Hackensack University Medical Center welcomes Michael D. Stifelman, M.D., as chairman of the Department of Urology and chief of Urologic Oncology.

“I am pleased to welcome Dr. Stifelman to his new position, and I am confident he will continue to elevate our team as one of the finest in the nation,” said Ihor S. Sawczuk, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical officer of HackensackUMC. Dr. Sawczuk is the outgoing chairman of the Urology Department, who is transitioning his role to president of HackensackUMC. 

Dr. Stifelman joined HackensackUMC from NYU Langone Medical Center in New York, NY, where he served in the following roles: professor of Urology, NYU School of Medicine; director of the Robotic Surgery Center, NYU Langone Medical Center; and chief of Urology Services, Tisch Hospital.

Dr. Stifelman is an internationally recognized pioneer and leader in robotic urologic oncology and upper tract urinary reconstructive surgery.  He has performed over 2,000 robotic procedures and has pioneered over a dozen minimally invasive surgeries.  He has been an invited lecturer and guest surgeon in 21 different countries spanning six different continents.  He has published 186 peer-reviewed articles and abstracts, 20 invited reviews/book chapters and 32 surgical technique videos that have been distributed by the American Urologic Association and World Congress of Endourology.  He has been recognized by Castle Connolly as Best Doctors of America, Best Cancer Doctors, Best Doctors in the New York Metro Area, and New York Magazine’s Best Doctors. 

Dr. Stifelman is an effective educator, researcher and innovator.  While at NYU Medical School he was responsible for developing and directing a robotic simulation skills lab, urologic skills lab and was a key participant in resident lecture series for both urology and general surgery.  His research which has led to numerous prestigious awards, focuses on developing and evaluating new technology and defining their exact roles in the operating room.  He also has played key developmental roles in designing and launching near infrared fluorescence imaging for renal surgery, drop in technology to enhance surgeon autonomy, tissue grafting for ureteral reconstruction and the use of inter-operative 3D virtual imaging.  

Dr. Stifelman received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY.  He performed his internship in general surgery and urology residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, NY.  He received his fellowship in endourology and laparoscopy at NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell, New York, NY and is board certified in urology.
