(Saddle River, NJ) On April 25, under bright, sunny skies, the 4thAnnual Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial Run was held in memory of the Saddle River resident who lost her battle with cervical cancer in July 2011 at the age of 46.  The race began at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church with a USATF certified 5K run/walk hosted by HackensackUMC Foundation, the Hughes and Zabransky families and the Run for Sue Committee.   More than 450 people participated in this year’s run, which raised in excess of $120,000 for Susan’s Suite and the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital (JMSCH) at HackensackUMC.

“The committee teamed up with the HackensackUMC Foundation to ensure Susan’s legacy lives on through Susan’s Suite --- a 10-bed oncology suite in our newly renovated Emergency and Trauma Center at HackensackUMC,” said Mark Sparta, executive vice president and chief population health officer of Hackensack University Health Network.“Susan’s Suite and all of the specialty–care areas in our Emergency and Trauma Center play a critical role in providing specialized treatment for patients whose health is already compromised due to an existing illness.”

Since it began in 2012, the Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial Run has raised more than half a million dollars to benefit Susan’s Suite at HackensackUMC. This year, a portion of the proceeds from the run will also fund a riding program at Pony Power Therapies in Mahwah for pediatric oncology patients from the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital.

Susan’s love of horses and her desire to help others drew her to become a volunteer with Pony Power Therapies in 2008, which led to a pilot program for children from the JMSCH. Proceeds from this year’s run will rekindle this program. Patients from the children’s hospital, along with siblings and other family members, will be interacting with horses and with each other, taking the focus off the illness for a time and sharing a special experience together.
