Dr. Joseph Parrillo Receives 2015 Harvey E. Nussbaum, MD, Distinguished Service Award by the American Heart Association

Dr. Joseph Parrillo, chairman of the Heart & Vascular Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center, received the 2015 Harvey E. Nussbaum, MD, Distinguished Service Award by the American Heart Association at the Affair of the Heart Ball. Dr. Parrillo was chosen for his extraordinary accomplishments in heart disease and stroke at the Heart & Vascular Hospital.
“Dr. Parrillo has been our chairman of the Heart & Vascular Hospital for more than two years and we couldn’t be more proud of what he has accomplished. Under Dr. Parrillo’s leadership, the Heart & Vascular Hospital continues to make strides to combat heart disease through innovative clinical research, high-quality care and state-of-the-art treatments. We are so delighted that the American Heart Association has recognized these efforts,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer, Hackensack University Health Network.
Dr. Parrillo was instrumental in developing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) at HackensackUMC. The transapical delivery method is a minimally invasive replacement of aortic heart valves through a small incision in the chest. HackensackUMC was the first hospital in Northern New Jersey to offer TAVR and the first hospital in New Jersey to be approved for both transapical TAVR and transfemoral TAVR under his leadership.
