Hackensack University Medical Center is pleased to announce that Robert Korngold, Ph.D., chairman of the Department of Research, is the recipient of the 2016 Outstanding Scientist Award, as part of the prestigious Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Awards®. These awards highlight “New Jersey’s very best healthcare leaders and providers who have made major innovations in education and research and have significantly impacted their community and the healthcare delivery system.”

“Congratulations to Dr. Korngold for receiving this prestigious recognition,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer of the Hackensack University Health Network. “Through his work as chairman of our Research Department for the past 11 years, Dr. Korngold has created an environment on campus that encourages innovation. His leadership has bolstered our program, and continues to expand its capabilities each year. Now, more than ever, research opportunities are creating more options for patients and delivering hope for tomorrow for so many patients.”

“I am honored to receive the Outstanding Scientist Award,” said Dr. Korngold. “I have been fortunate to work among some of the most talented professionals in the field – all with the common goal of discovering new treatment for not just our HackensackUMC patients, but for patients around the world.”

The Excellence in Medicine Awards are named after Edward J. Ill, M.D., and date back to 1939. Since 2003, the event has been sponsored by MDAdvantage Insurance Company.

HackensackUMC was home to more than 700 active/open clinical research studies last year, and remains the top independent hospital recipient of National Institutes of Health research funding.

Beyond the walls of HackensackUMC, Dr. Korngold has made remarkable contributions to the field of science on an international and national level. His work regarding the role of donor T-cells in the development of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in matched bone marrow transplantation has been described as “landmark” and influenced clinical treatment.  His mouse models for GVHD became a mainstay of numerous future immunobiology studies in the field.

Dr. Korngold also recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation for the exceptional pioneering contributions he and his research have made upon the field. This is one of the highest honors a scientist can achieve in the field of clinical transplantation and has been given previously to Nobel Prize Laureates.

He is currently and has served for the last 15 years as editor-in-chief for the Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, the journal of the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, and has served in an editorial capacity for the Journal of Immunology. He has nearly 120 peer-reviewed paper publications, 40 book chapters and monographs, and eight patents held.
