“I am tremendously honored to be elected as vice chair and chair elect of such a prestigious organization,” said Dr. Kimura. “Every rheumatologist and researcher involved in CARRA is dedicated to improving the lives of children suffering from arthritis and rheumatic diseases. I look forward to doing my part in making a difference in their lives and to the field of pediatric rheumatology in my new position.”
CARRA, founded in 2002, is a pediatric rheumatology research network with more than 350 members in more than 100 sites throughout the U.S. and Canada who work together to find treatments for juvenile arthritis and other autoimmune and inflammatory diseases in children, such as lupus, dermatomyositis and vasculitis.
CARRA has obtained more than $40 million in research grants to-date, and successfully established the largest pediatric rheumatic diseases registry in the world. It currently has more than 9,000 patients enrolled. The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital is the CARRA Registry’s second largest enrolling site.
As vice chair, Dr. Kimura will work closely with the other members of the CARRA Executive Committee to expand the network by fostering grant submissions by members, facilitating the conduct of clinical research and actively securing new and expanded funding for the operation and research of the network. She will work on all aspects of network functions, which include all operational, fiscal and scientific functions for CARRA. Along with the network chair and immediate past chair, Dr. Kimura will provide oversight on the research committees within CARRA, the Finance Committee and Ad-hoc committees. Maintaining and fostering close collaborative relationships with the Arthritis Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and other relevant organizations will be an important aspect of work to be performed including oversight of the day-to-day operations of CARRA network. The vice chair has a three-year term. Dr. Kimura will then assume the role of chair of the CARRA network for another three-year term from July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2019.
Dr. Kimura received her M.D. degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, and completed her pediatric residency and pediatric rheumatology fellowship at the Babies Hospital, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. Dr. Kimura has been active in teaching and research in pediatric rheumatology on a national and international level.
"This is a very exciting time to be involved in pediatric rheumatology research,” she added. “There are so many new and effective therapies being developed and the prospect of much better outcomes for children with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases.”
