Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer, Hackensack University Health Network and Ihor S. Sawczuk, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical officer, HackensackUMC, participated in the ‘ALS Ice Bucket Challenge’ on August 20 to raise awareness and support for the ALS Association (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The two stood near the front entrance of Hackensack University Medical Center, as dozens of people, including employees watched.
“We’re supporting a great cause and we’re happy to do it,” said Mr. Garrett. “I believe we are the first hospital in our area to accept this challenge and we’re proud to do that on behalf of Hackensack University Medical Center.”
Mr. Garrett then nominated Dev Gupta, M.D, chief of the Division of Neurology at HackensackUMC along with employees of the Hackensack Neurology Group to take the challenge as well, which they immediately accepted.
The City of Hackensack Fire Department helped to further douse the groups with hoses from the fire truck. Later in the week, the flight crew of Hackensack University Health Network’s helicopter, AirMed One, took the challenge as well. So far, several thousand dollars have been raised by Hackensack University Health Network for the ALS Association and additional Ice Bucket Challenges are scheduled to take place in the coming days.
