The American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC) today announced that Hackensack University Medical Center (HackensackUMC) has joined as a business member. HackensackUMC is the first hospital to join ASBC, which works on policy changes that move the economy towards more social, economic and environmental sustainability.

“HackensackUMC is excited to become the first hospital to join this impressive coalition of businesses that are working to achieve a more sustainable and successful economy. It is our obligation as public health professionals to evolve with the changing healthcare landscape while staying true to our core principals of putting our patients’ best interests first.  Embracing sustainability is integral to that effort,” said Robert C. Garrett, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hackensack University Health Network.  “We are excited to add our voice to strengthen the power of business to create jobs, protect the environment and build a sustainable economy both here in New Jersey and across the country.”

“We are very pleased to have Hackensack University Medical Center, one of the nation’s most innovative healthcare facilities, join ASBC,” said Richard Eidlin, Co-Founder and Vice President of Policy for ASBC. “We applaud Hackensack’s focus on providing comprehensive health care and wellness services that lead to more productive workplaces and healthier employees. In addition, their commitment to environmental stewardship and reducing toxic chemicals is a great complement to ASBC’s work on chemical reform and addressing climate change. We look forward to working with the Hackensack University Medical Center.”

HackensackUMC, in collaboration with The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center® at HackensackUMC, is committed to identifying, controlling, and ultimately preventing the toxic exposures in the environment that threaten the health and well-being of children, their families and the wider community.   About HackensackUMC’s participation in the ASBC Deirdre Imus said, “I applaud Robert Garrett and HackensackUMC for again taking the lead in healthcare on protecting people and the planet.”

HackensackUMC continues to be recognized for its efforts to promote sustainability in healthcare.  Earlier this year, HackensackUMC received Practice Greenhealth’s highest honor as a 2015 Environmental Excellence Award winner, earning recognition once again as one of the top 25 green hospitals in the country.  Practice Greenhealth also honored HackensackUMC for outstanding performance in healthcare sustainability in the areas of Leadership, Chemicals, Environmentally Preferable Purchasing and Climate.

In addition, HackensackUMC achieved the HealthTrust Social Stewardship award in recognition of its leadership in sustainability in the supply chain.
