The Department of Surgery and the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center today announced the addition of Leslie L. Montgomery, M.D., FACS, as chief of the Division of Breast Surgery.  Dr. Montgomery is an internationally-recognized, board-certified surgical oncologist specializing in breast cancer.

“Having a world-class physician like Dr. Montgomery at HackensackUMC will continue to elevate the excellent care we provide our patients,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer, Hackensack University Health Network.  “Dr. Montgomery is a leader in breast cancer and we are looking forward to all of the advances she will make in improving women’s health.”

Dr. Montgomery joins HackensackUMC from Montefiore Medical Center, where she served as the chief of the Division of Breast Surgery and director of Breast Services at the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care in New York City.  In addition, Dr. Montgomery was an attending breast surgeon at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City for more than 11 years, where she served as director of the Special Surveillance Breast Program and the director of the Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program.

“I am so excited to join HackensackUMC and to work with such an accomplished team of dedicated care providers to deliver outstanding services for our patients,” said Dr. Montgomery.  “I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues to prevent, treat and manage breast cancer and to help our patients on their journey to better understand and manage breast surgery.”

Dr. Montgomery received her undergraduate degree at Stanford University in Stanford, CA, and her medical degree at the University of California at San Francisco. After her residency in general surgery at the New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center, she completed research fellowships at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA, and at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Breast Surgery is a division of the Department of Surgery at HackensackUMC, with a team of on-site, full-time, fellowship-trained breast surgeons. The division’s multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer includes working closely with a team of radiologists, pathologists, plastic surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and nurse navigators.  This multidisciplinary team has devoted their practices primarily to the management of diseases of breast. This specialized approach to treating breast cancer provides patients with the exact type of services they need to battle the disease and its physical, emotional and social side effects.  Recently, the Breast Service received Disease-Specific Care Certification from the Joint Commission, scoring perfectly with no recommendations for improvement.
