HackensackUMC Achieves Highest Accreditation for its Emergency Medicine Residency Program
April 27, 2016 02:20 PM
Hackensack University Medical Center is pleased to announce that it has achieved the highest level of accreditation for its Emergency Medicine Residency program. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) granted a 10-year accreditation with no citations.
“I want to congratulate the entire Emergency Medicine Residency team,” said Ihor S. Sawczuk, M.D., president of HackensackUMC. “This notable accreditation recognizes a relatively new program, which will graduate its first class in July of this year.”
Leaders of the program attribute its success to effective strategic planning and development, a focus on patient-centered communication training, high-quality faculty, and most importantly the residents themselves, who are all selected as part of the national residency match program.
“This is a real reflection of how we have attracted the right match,” said Joseph Feldman, M.D., chairman, Emergency Services, HackensackUMC. “We want residents who not only provide exceptional clinical care, but are also engaged in the process of elevating their communication skills to deliver the best possible experience for patients and their families.”
Along with placing an emphasis on excellent communication, the academic teaching faculty has clinical expertise in all aspects of emergency medicine training. Many have attained additional fellowship training in areas of expertise, which contributes to sharing their knowledge with residents.
“Our residents are outstanding and come from some of the best medical schools in the country,” said Douglas Finefrock, D.O., vice-chair, Emergency Department & Trauma Services and Residency Program Director. “They bring knowledge and passion in their pursuit to become the best emergency medicine doctors possible and challenge our department to continue to practice medicine at the highest level.”
Given the 10-year ACGME accreditation, the next site visit will occur in 2026.
“The ACGME accreditation is the latest demonstration of our commitment to raising the bar on academic excellence,” said Jeffrey R. Boscamp, M.D., vice president and chief academic officer, HackensackUMC and physician-in-chief, Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital. “I want to congratulate our team for their hard work and dedication in attaining this very significant achievement.”
