Hackensack University Medical Center has been recognized as one of the 2015 Best Hospitals in America for Stroke Care, the newest award from Women’s Choice Award®. Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States and this award identifies centers of excellence across the country for stroke care. The winning hospitals were chosen from 1,120 centers that are certified as either an Advanced Primary Stroke Center or Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center. In addition, the patient recommendation ratings for the selected hospitals are higher than the national average.
“This recognition demonstrates our commitment to being one of the top hospitals in the country for providing aggressive, proven stroke care,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer, Hackensack University Health Network.
“I would like to commend Dr. Subasini Dash, director of the Stroke Center, and the entire team for the work they are doing to improve the lives of stroke victims,” said Ihor S. Sawczuk, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical officer. “We strive to remain at the forefront of clinical excellence and this award solidifies our mission.”
Hospitals earning the 2015 America’s Best Stroke Centers Award must be certified by the Joint Commission/American Heart Association Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification. The Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification recognizes centers that meet high standards for stroke care as determined by the Joint Commission. To receive advanced certification, Stroke Centers must meet disease-specific requirements, clinically specific requirements and expectations which include:
- Use a standardized method of delivering care
- Support patient self-management activities
- Tailor treatment and intervention to individual needs
- Promote the flow of patient information across settings and providers, while protecting patient rights, security and privacy
- Analyze and use standardized performance measure data to continually improve treatment plans
- Demonstrate their application of and compliance with clinical practice guidelines published by the AHA/ASA or equivalent evidence-based guidelines
In addition, publicly available data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and patient recommendation ratings data were included when assessing each hospital’s clinical performance.
