HackensackUMC Foundation Receives Donation to Fund the Fitness and Wellness Center

The HackensackUMC Foundation recently received a $25,000 donation from The Joseph and Anthony Maio Wellness Foundation, which will benefit the HackensackUMC Wellness Center,located in the HackensackUMC Fitness and Wellness Center in Maywood. 

The Joseph and Anthony Maio Wellness Foundation, named for the late sons of George and Paula Maio of Hackensack, provide donations to organizations focused on improving the overall physical and mental well-being of individuals. 

The HackensackUMC Fitness and Wellness Center combines medically based care with a world-class fitness club.   The 112,000 square foot facility includes 35,000 square feet of wellness/medical space.   Included in the HackensackUMC Wellness Center arebehavioral health services, the MOLLY Diabetes Education/Management Center for Adults and Children, Physical Therapy, a Women’s Health Center with Mammography and Bone Density Screening, a large community health education area with a demonstration cooking studio and a host of preventive wellness based services.

 “I appreciate the generosity of the Maio family for their contribution.” said Diego Coira, M.D., chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at HackensackUMC. “This generous donation will be used to expand our psychotherapy program, including the addition of four psychotherapists.   Our overall goal is to reduce the unnecessary use of psychiatric medications and strengthen our psychotherapy division to better serve the needs of our patients.” 

The outpatient division of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine includes seven psychiatrists and two advanced practice nurses.   The Wellness Center will officially open in March. 

The Fitness Center, which opened December 30, 2013, features an expansive fitness floor with state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment, salt-water filtered pools, a large variety of group fitness classes, cooking studio, a sports performance training center, luxurious locker rooms with towel service, a day spa and much more.
