The 26th Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony as held by the Medical and Dental Staff at HackensackUMC.

The Medical and Dental Staff at HackensackUMC recently held the 26th Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony.

The Medical and Dental Scholarship Awards program began in 1991 by Michael Petriella, M.D., former vice chairman of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at HackensackUMC. It was Dr. Petriella’s belief that non-physician employees should be recognized for the work they do and to be encouraged to pursue their education.  The scholarships are awarded to hospital employees and their dependents. This year, 10 individuals each received scholarships in the amount of $3,000. The scholarships were presented by 10 physician honorees.

“I am really proud of our medical and dental staff and thank them for their participation in the scholarship program,” said Ihor S. Sawczuk, M.D., president, HackensackUMC.  “More than 250 employees and their dependents have received this scholarship since 1991. In the last five years alone, more than $150,000 has been awarded. On any given day, our hallways are filled with students, whether they are medical students, nursing students or allied health students.   At HackensackUMC, we have a mission to teach and educate. And in that same light, we are here today to honor those who want to continue to learn and reach their professional goals.”

Applicants are judged on their essays, letters of recommendation, transcripts, service to the community and letters of acceptance to colleges, graduate schools or accredited institutions.  The awards are funded by dues collected from the physicians of the HackensackUMC Medical and Dental Staff.  Over the last 25 years, the scholarships have been named in honor of HackensackUMC physicians.
