HackensackUMC has received the HealthTrust 2015 Member Recognition Award for Social Stewardship.
HackensackUMC is pleased to announce that it has received the HealthTrust 2015 Member Recognition Award for Social Stewardship. The medical center was honored for a second consecutive year for demonstrating a commitment to conservation and preservation of the healthcare environment.
“I am proud of our HackensackUMC Green Team along with the team at The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer of the Hackensack University Health Network. “This second consecutive award is a clear reflection of their continued environmental commitment to our patients, staff and community.”
The award was presented during a ceremony in Nashville. In the year since the last award in recognition of environmentally friendly programs related to recycling, waste management and reduction, the Green Team has also focused on preventive health. The 185-member team promotes and develops environmental programs, some of which occur organically.
For example, a team member in the operating room noticed many sterilized towels going unused and suggested switching from 10-packs to five-packs. That simple change lightened the load at the landfill and resulted in more than $100,000 in savings for the year.
“On the national level, the approach is shifting from reactive to proactive,” said Kyle Tarfuri, senior sustainability advisor at HackensackUMC. “The healthcare industry’s impact on the environment is staggering and we take our leadership role in this regard very seriously.”
HackensackUMC is a member hospital of HealthTrust, a group purchasing affiliation, headquartered in Brentwood, TN. HealthTrust works to strengthen provider performance and clinical excellence through an aligned membership model and the delivery of total cost management solutions.
HackensackUMC, in collaboration with The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center, is committed to identifying, controlling, and ultimately preventing the toxic exposures in the environment that threaten the health and well-being of children, their families and the wider community.
