Hackensack University Medical Center held its 126thAnnual Joint Meeting of the Boards, together with Hackensack University Health Network, on Thursday, March 27, at the Jersey City Hyatt.

Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer of the Hackensack University Health Network, shared updates from the past year with the audience, which included board members, trustees, executive leaders, elected officials, donors, physicians and staff. Garrett also made several announcements, which will impact the future of healthcare at the Hackensack University Health Network, HackensackUMC, as well as New Jersey.

The first highlight of the afternoon was when Garrett announced that Larry Inserra Jr., chairman, HackensackUMC Board of Governors and his family have donated $5 million to HackensackUMC.  “Larry’s donation will allow us to continue our mission in providing great quality care, research and innovation,” said Garrett.

Garrett went on to recognize the award-winning team of doctors who practice at Hackensack, and recognized the achievements of healthcare team members in different departments, including Research and Information Technology.

In discussing the future of healthcare, Garrett made the announcement of a new partnership between the Hackensack University Health Network and CityMD, a company that owns urgent care centers throughout the metropolitan area. “CityMD has demonstrated coordinated care that is monitored from beginning to the end of treatment,” said Garrett. “This partnership will allow us to replicate this comprehensive model across our region,” he added. Garrett also announced that Hackensack University Health Network and Palisades Medical Center passed a new resolution that strengthens the relationship between the two organizations.

Reflecting back on 2013, Garrett spoke about the completion of a major phase in the multi-phase renovation and expansion of the Emergency and Trauma Center, including the increased 20,000 square feet, the 29 new private patient rooms and the specialized cardiac, oncology and pediatric areas. Garrett also recognized that HackensackUMC continued as an industry leader, still ranked as the number one hospital in all of New Jersey and in the top three in the New York Metro Area by U.S. News & World Report

HackensackUMC’s nurses also continue as leaders, Garrett told the audience. The team became just one of two in the country to receive Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, marking HackensackUMC’s 20thyear as a Magnet hospital.

In speaking about Hackensack University Health Network, Garrett said the network made history in 2013 by entering into an alliance with six other health systems, forming AllSpire Health Partners. AllSpire represents 28 hospitals and serves more than six million people, “… making AllSpire the largest healthcare consortium of its kind in the entire nation,” he said.  The excitement of the re-opening of Pascack Valley Hospital as HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley in June of 2013 was also revisited at the meeting.

Another 2013 highlight Garrett spoke of was the opening of HackensackUMC Fitness & Wellness: Powered by the Giants.  “We’ve coupled preventive wellness services, such as behavioral health, diabetes care and physical therapy, with some of the most advanced fitness equipment and training programs available anywhere,” Garrett said.

Prior to Garrett’s remarks, Joseph Simunovich, chairman, Hackensack University Health Network Board of Trustees; Ulises E. Diaz, chairman of the HackensackUMC Foundation Board of Trustees; and Lawrence Inserra Jr., chairman, Hackensack Board of Governors; gave their respective reports.
