HackensackUMC Hosts 24th Annual Emergency Medical Services Excellence Awards Program

HackensackUMC recently held the 24th Annual Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Excellence Awards Program.

On Monday, May 11, HackensackUMC recognized and honored the dedication of the men and women who respond to life saving emergencies.  This year’s theme was “EMS Strong.”  Award recipients included nurses, paramedics, EMTs, police officers, and firefighters from 35 Bergen County municipalities. Many recipients are HackensackUMC employees.

The annual ceremony not only recognizes the individuals who have gone beyond and stood out as award winners, but also celebrates the spirit of collaboration between medical centers, physicians, police officers, firefighters, nurses, paramedics and EMTs across Bergen County.  In 2014, the Emergency Medical Services team at HackensackUMC was put to the test as the Ebola virus spread throughout the world.

“We were selected as one of three state-designated Ebola Tier II hospitals, and our Ebola Response Team truly shined,” said Dianne A.M. Aroh, MS, RN, NEA-BC, executive vice president, chief patient care and clinical officer, HackensackUMC.  “HackensackUMC Emergency Medical Services had a dedicated ambulance for Ebola response, with a highly-trained EMS Team that was on-call 24/7. Working together, we were able to safely and effectively treat and assess two suspected cases of Ebola – including the nation’s only suspected pediatric patient.”

This year, HackensackUMC celebrated the 41st anniversary of the Mobile Intensive Care Unit (Mobile ICU) serving the community. In 2014, the Mobile ICU treated more than 8,800 patients; the Basic Life Support Division responded to more than 13,500 calls; the Specialty Care Transport Unit responded to nearly 1,000 calls and the Mobile Intensive Care Communications (MICCOM) dispatched more than 158,000 calls.  In addition, the Air Medical program – through the Hackensack University Health Network helicopter, AirMed One – completed 252 flights in 2014, for a total of 780 to date since 2012.

“You all put your life in harm’s way on a daily basis and for that we thank you,” said Joseph Feldman, M.D., chairman, Emergency Services, HackensackUMC. “The theme of this year’s awards ceremony, EMS Strong, is very appropriate as our EMS team in Bergen County is stronger and better than ever and continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our patients and their families.”
