HackensackUMC Molly Diabetes Center to Host 16th Annual Diabetes First Seminar Featuring Chef Sam Talbot of Top Chef

Monday, November 10, 2014 from 5 - 9 p.m., the Hackensack University Medical Center (HackensackUMC) Molly Diabetes/Education Center for Adults and Children will host the 16thAnnual “Diabetes First” Seminar: Living Healthy with Diabetes. Chef Sam Talbot, author and a semi-finalist on Bravo’s Top Chef will be the featured speaker with “In the Kitchen with Sam Talbot.”
Sam is a chef, author and television personality and was a semi-finalist on season two of Bravo’s “Top Chef.” Sam is the former founding executive chef of the Surf Lodge in Montauk, NY, a premiere dining destination of the Hamptons. He went on to open Imperial No. Nine in the Mondrian Soho Hotel in New York City. He is also the author of “The Sweet Life: Diabetes without Boundaries.” Sam was diagnosed at 12 years old with type 1 diabetes and that has led him to work with organizations such as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Natural Resources Defense Council, among others and it has brought him to the forefront of the “Sustainable Living” movement, which seeks to break down the walls between the way we eat and the way we live, understanding the impact of food on life and life on food. This understanding has become a driving force for his cooking style and recipes.
Also featured during the seminar are HackensackUMC experts Thomas (Pat) Mahady, exercise physiologist, HackensackUMC with “In the Gym with Thomas Mahady;” and Louis Teichholz, M.D. division chief of Cardiology and vice chair for Quality of the Heart and Vascular Hospital, HackensackUMC with “Herbs/Complimentary Medicine.”
