(Grenada, British West Indies) - Every year, Hackensack University Medical Center (HackensackUMC) and St. George’s University School of Medicine (SGUSOM) award partial scholarships to SGU students who are admitted to medical school. In March 2015, SGUSOM held its yearly clinical meeting on the Island of Grenada. The academic teaching staff from Medical Education for SGUSOM at HackensackUMC met with the four students who received scholarships in 2014. They are: Andre Savadjian, of Old Tappan; Ali Atoot, of Hasbrouck Heights; Priju Varghese, of Bergenfield; and Eric Wien, of Upper Saddle River. Another student who attended the meeting is a 2013 scholarship recipient. Alesandra Santamaria is in her second year of medical school and will start her clinical education at HackensackUMC later this summer.
In order to be considered for the scholarships, applicants must be a relative of someone who works at HackensackUMC, be an employee themselves or live in Bergen County. The students are selected based on financial hardship, volunteer work, academic scholarship and research. These scholarships are a result of HackensackUMC’s academic partnership with SGUSOM. The scholarships awarded are for 50 percent tuition for the student’s remaining years of enrollment at the medical school.
