Hackensack University Medical Center is pleased to announce that James Wittig, M.D., will arrive full time in November, assuming the role of vice chairman of Orthopedic Surgery, chief of Orthopedic Oncology and director of the Skin and Sarcoma Division at the John Theurer Cancer Center at HackensackUMC.
“I am excited about the phenomenal opportunity to work with an exceptional group of orthopedic surgeons and to collaborate with top notch medical oncologists at the John Theurer Cancer Center,” Dr. Wittig said. “HackensackUMC offers extraordinary patient care, new opportunities for research and unsurpassed nursing care.”
“Given his expertise in the field of orthopedic oncology, Dr. Wittig’s full time arrival will enhance our multidisciplinary approach to providing the highest level of care and the most innovative treatment options for our patients,” said Ihor S. Sawczuk, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical officer at HackensackUMC.
Dr. Wittig was recently recognized by his peers as one of the Top 13 Orthopedic Oncologists in the United Sates as reported in Orthopedics This Week.
“Primary orthopedic cancers are rare, and Dr. Wittig is one of only a handful of orthopedic oncologists in the tri-state region who is experienced in performing complicated limb-sparing surgeries and other orthopedic cancer techniques, such as epineural analgesia, radiofrequency ablation and cryosurgery,” said Andre Goy, M.D., M.S., chairman and director, and chief of Lymphoma, John Theurer Cancer Center and chief science officer and director of research and innovation of Regional Cancer Care Associates. “His experience and training make him uniquely qualified to remove these rare tumors, helping to ensure our patients receive the most advanced treatment options available at Hackensack University Medical Center.”
Reflecting on advancements in his field, Dr. Wittig credits three of his mentors, Ralph Marcove, M.D., Martin Malawer, M.D., and Harold Dick, M.D., pioneers in the field of limb-sparing surgery. “Prior to their initiative in orthopedic oncology, almost everybody was treated with amputations. As a resident and fellow, I had an opportunity to perform surgeries with them and I had the privilege of seeing patients years later with their extremities saved.”
“I look forward to working more extensively with Dr. Wittig and his team,” said Michael A. Kelly, M.D., chairman, Department of Orthopedic Surgery at HackensackUMC. “I am confident that our patients will benefit from Dr. Wittig’s full time arrival and I welcome this dynamic collaboration.”
Dr. Wittig is looking forward to expanding his work at HackensackUMC on several fronts. He will, in part, institute various continuing medical education courses, expand clinical research projects in orthopedic surgery, establish new clinical trials, and organize graduate and post graduate medical education opportunities for residents and fellows.
“I love teaching,” Dr. Wittig said. “I had great mentors going through college, medical school and my residency. As a teacher, it’s great to see students develop new skills and progress - and it’s very rewarding to make a positive impact on their lives and careers.”
Dr. Wittig’s office address is 20 Prospect Avenue, Suite 501, Hackensack, NJ 07601. His office phone number is 551-996-2533 and the fax number is 551-996-0877.
