Colleagues, family and friends gathered to dedicate the Thomas J. Lynch, M.D. Laboratory at the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center on October 8.

Wednesday, October 8, the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center dedicated the Hematology Lab to the Thomas J. Lynch, M.D. Laboratory.  Andrew Pecora, M.D. F.A.C.P., C.P.E, chief innovations officer and professor and vice president of Cancer Services hosted the event and introduced guests Bernard Saccarro, M.D.; Thomas Lynch, Jr, M.D.; and Stanley Waintraub, M.D. to share their thoughts about Dr. Lynch.

“When I first met him he told me ‘You know, kid, I am not going to teach you anything about being a scientist or medicine, but I am going to teach you how to be a good doctor.’ And he established that legacy here at Hackensack for all of us to follow,” said Dr. Pecora.

Dr. Lynch began the Hematology/Oncology program at HackensackUMC in 1962.  As Thomas Lynch, Jr., M.D. explained, “When I was five-years-old he would take me to the lab and talk to me about his work. He loved the people that made this place special: patients, staff and fellow doctors.”

One of Dr. Lynch’s closest colleagues, Bernard Saccarro, M.D. vice-chairman, Department of Internal Medicine, Hackensack University Medical Center remarked, “His enthusiasm carried through to his lectures all the way to the bedside of his patients. This is an honor he truly deserves.”

“Dr. Lynch was a wonderful role model, brilliant doctor, and an incredible man.  The hematology program grew from a seed that he planted and how fitting is it that we will see a picture of him every time we enter the lab,” said Stanley Waintraub, M.D. current chief of The Division of Hematology at HackensackUMC.

Dr. Lynch was born in Holyoke, Mass., in 1928. He was the son of Joseph Lynch, a prominent dentist and Gertrude Lynch, both of Holyoke, Mass. He graduated from the Williston School in Northampton, Mass., and received his undergraduate degree from St. Michael's College in Winoski Park, Vt., and a master's degree from the University of Vermont in Burlington. He earned his Medical Degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Jersey City Medical Center. In 1960 he entered his Hematology Fellowship at Boston City Hospital, studying under Dr. William Maloney, who was one of the nation's first blood specialists.

In 1962 Dr. Lynch was the first Hematologist to join the medical staff of Hackensack Hospital. He was one of the first physicians to treat Leukemia in Bergen County. Dr. Lynch served in a number of roles at the hospital, including being director of Medical Education and a co-founder of one of Bergen County's first hospices. In addition to his private practice, he served as an Assistant Bergen County Medical Examiner for 25 years.  Dr. Lynch passed away on October 23, 2009.

The Thomas J. Lynch, M.D. Laboratory is an oncology focused hematology lab seeing over 400 John Theurer Cancer Center patients per day, resulting in over 5,000 laboratory tests. The lab is COLA accredited and has received the COLA Laboratory Excellence Award for their commitment to quality patient testing and laboratory practices for the past ten years. In addition to simple blood draws, the lab conducts advanced hematology testing including specialty tests for bone marrow transplant patients as well as donor qualification testing in compliance with the National Marrow Donor Program. Additionally,    complex tests such as Leukemia and Lymphoma immunophenotyping are done at the lab by flow cytometry technology, routinely used in the diagnosis of blood cancers.
