Vice Chairman and Program Director

Emergency Medicine Residency
Beth Israel Emergency Medicine

Description

Dr. Finefrock is the Vice-Chairman of the Emergency Department and founding EM Residency Program Director at Hackensack University Medical Center. He is proud to be leading the largest EM residency program in the state of New Jersey.

Since completing his EM residency in 2003, Dr. Finefrock has dedicated his career towards teaching healthcare providers how to maximize their medical knowledge while simultaneously using communication techniques to improve their patient’s experience. He started his academic career as a faculty instructor of medical students at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY. He then became the Assistant EM Residency Program Director at Mount Sinai- Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan, NY, where he was voted "Faculty Teacher of the Year" in his first year as faculty.
Dr. Finefrock founded the national task force “Patient Satisfaction Education and Evaluation” through the Council of EM Residency Director’s to help EM residents and faculty to better prepare residents for real-life expectations as attending physicians.  Dr. Finefrock lectures nationally on patient communication techniques and strategies that improve patient safety, reduce malpractice risk, and establish a trusting, interactive relationship with patients.  He created the PatientSET™ Program that utilizes online, video CME courses and a smartphone/tablet assessment tool for bedside observations.  The PatientSET™ Program is now being used by physicians and nurses in over 200 hospitals throughout the country and is noted in the following link

Upon successfully building the EM residency program at HackensackUMC, the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine asked Dr. Finefrock to become a national consultant for other residency programs under ACGME review.  As he notes, “A successful residency program at its core places the residents first.  It encourages residents to be the fabric of its evaluation, review and promotion process and relies upon constant feedback from them to create ongoing positive changes.  Residents who shape their program in this way remain active learners throughout the educational experience.”
