Repair of Congenital Abnormalities of the Heart

Congenital abnormalities refers to a defects in the structure of the heart.  These defects often occur before birth.  Defects of the heart can obstruct or cause abnormal patterns of blood flow through the heart. 

 Atrial septal defects:  In atrial septal defects there is a hole in the wall (septum) of the heart between the atria ( upper chambers). 

 

 

 

Ventricular septal defects:  In ventricular septal defects there is a hole in the wall (septum) of the heart between the ventricles (lower chambers)
