There are four valves within the heart: Aortic, Mitral, Pulmonary and Tricuspid. The valves direct the blood flow in proper direction throughout the heart.

Valve Repair Surgery:
Valve repair procedures include: Resection, Commissurotomy and Decalcification.
Valve Replacement Surgery:
There are two different types of valve replacements: Tissue and Mechanical
Tissue Valves: Tissue Valves also referred to as Biological valves can be primarily made from pig tissue (porcine), cow tissue pericardial (bovine) or other pericardial tissues.
Mechanical Valves: Mechanical Valves are made up of mechanical parts consisting of carbon leaflets with a fabric covered ring. These valves require anticoagulation with Coumadin therapy.
Mitral Valve Replacement and Repair
Mitral Regurgitation (Mitral Insuffiency)occurs when the leaflets of the mitral valve do not close completely. This results in blood flowing backward across the valve.
Mitral Stenosisis the narrowing of the heart valve. This narrowing limits the blood flow from the left chamber (atrium) to the left chamber (ventricle) of the heart.
Aortic Valve Replacement and Repair
Aortic Valve Regurgitation ( Aortic Insufficiency)occurs when the leaflets of the aortic valve do not close completely. Regurgitation or “leaky valve” causes the blood which is ejected by the heart to flow backward.
Aortic Valve Stenosis: is when the leaflets of the aortic valve become inflexible, stiff leading to the narrowing of the aortic valve causing limited blood flow.
