Who We Are

The Life Support Training Center at Hackensack University Medical Center is an authorized provider of American Heart Association's (AHA) Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) courses. We offer training courses in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Basic Life Support (BLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid courses are offered to the community through our Community CPR Training Center.

The ACLS and PALS courses are available to HackensackUMC employees, with limited enrollment offered to non-employees. 

Additionally, the Life Support Training Center is designated as an authorized Safe Sitter® teaching site. Safe Sitter® is a medically-acurate up-to-date babysitting course that teaches boys and girls, ages 11-13 years, life and safety skills. This nationally recognized curriculum is age-appropriate, hands-on, and developed by SafeSitter,Inc. a not-for-profit organization. This course offering is not sponsored by American Heart Association, but the rescue skills taught in this course are based on the current AHA's guidelines for CPR and first aid for choking,

Community CPR Training Center

Our Community CPR Training Center offers a variety of American Heart Association courses which teach the information and skills of CPR, first aid, and the use of the automated external defibrillator (AED) for both in-hospital and out-of-hospital healthcare providers, lay-rescuers with the duty to respond, members of the community, and families and friends.  We also offer BLS Instructor and Heartsaver® Instructor courses.

Our CPR and first aid courses are offered monthly on-site at Hackensack University Medical Center. To inquire about scheduling private group classes or off-site classes at your workplace or organization with six or more participants, please contact us by phone at 551-996-2401 or by email at Mail_CprTraining@HackensackUMC.org.

 

CPR Courses

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Initial 

The Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course covers core material such as adult, child, and infant CPR skills, two-rescuer CPR, use of a pocket mask and the bag-mask device, foreign-body airway obstruction, and the use of the automated external defibrillator (AED). This course is presented in a practice-while-watching video format. It is designed for healthcare providers such as dentists, doctors, EMS personnel, lifeguards, medical assistants, nurses, paramedics, pharmacists, physician assistants, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, and others who require a credential documenting successful completion.  This program includes both written and skills evaluations. A course completion card will be issued upon successful completion of the course requirements. Click here for schedule and registration form.

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Renewal 

The Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers renewal course reviews core material such as adult, child, and infant CPR skills, two-rescuer CPR, use of a pocket mask and the bag-mask device, foreign-body airway obstruction, and the use of the automated external defibrillator (AED). This course is presented in a practice-while-watching video format. It is designed for healthcare providers such as dentists, doctors, EMS personnel, lifeguards, medical assistants, nurses, paramedics, pharmacists, physician assistants, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, and others who have previously attended an initial American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course and need to update their skills. Providers who intend to take the renewal course must present a valid and current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider card. The renewal program includes both written and skills evaluations. A course completion card will be issued upon successful completion of the course requirements.

Heartsaver® CPR AED

The Heartsaver® CPR AED course presents information and teaches skills that lay-rescuers need to respond to life-threatening emergencies involving adults, children, and infants. This course is presented in a practice-while-watching video format.  It is designed for members of the community, such as babysitters or caregivers, coaches, fire and police personnel, security guards, teachers, and others who have a duty to respond to a cardiac emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements.  A course completion card will be issued upon successful completion of the course requirements. Click here for schedule and registration form.

Heartsaver® CPR AED: For Middle and High School Students

This Heartsaver® CPR AED program is tailored for middle and high school students, in 8th through 12th grade. Students will learn CPR and relief of choking for adults, children and infants, the use of barrier devices, and the use of the automated external defibrillator (AED). This course is presented in a practice-while-watching video format. It is perfect for students planning summer employment as babysitters, camp/recreation counselors, waiters/waitresses, etc. Students will receive a course completion card upon successful completion of the course requirements. Click here for schedule and registration form.

Family and Friends®CPR

The Family and Friends® program is intended for family members who want to learn rescue skills for loved ones. This course is perfect for new and expectant parents, grandparents, relatives, and seniors. This class presents information and teaches the skills of CPR and first aid for choking for adults, children, and infants. 

This course is intended for those participants who are interested in learning the skills but do not need a course completion card. Click here for schedule and registration form.

 

First Aid Courses

Heartsaver® Adult First Aid

The Heartsaver® Adult First Aid course presents information and teaches skills that will prepare members of the community to respond to first aid emergencies involving adults. This course may be taken alone as a one- night course or as a two-night course in combination with the Heartsaver® CPR AED course. The Heartsaver® Adult First Aid course covers first aid basics, medical emergencies, injury emergencies and environmental emergencies. This program is presented in a practice-while-watching video format.  A course completion card will be provided upon successful completion of the course requirements.

Heartsaver® Pediatric First Aid

This program is presented in a practice-while-watching video format.  A course completion card will be provided upon successful completion of course requirements.

Instructor Courses

Basic Life Support Instructor Course

The Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor Course is designed to prepare American Heart Association (AHA) instructor candidates to disseminate the skills, science and philosophy of resuscitation programs to participants of BLS courses.  This course will prepare the instructor candidate to facilitate, evaluate, and remediate students during AHA BLS provider courses.

Safe Sitter®: Babysitter Training Course 

 

Safe Sitter®: Babysitting Training for Pre-Teens (11-13 years old)  

Babysitting is an important business and good babysitters are always in demand! Today’s babysitters need to know more than just the basics to keep themselves and the children in their care safe. That’s why Safe Sitter®, an up-to-date and well-rounded youth development program with a medical basis, teaches young teens life and safety skills to keep them safe now and in the future. It also equips them with the tools needed to stay home alone safely and with confidence.  The Safe Sitter® Babysitter Training Course is a nationally-recognized, pediatrician-developed course which includes child-care techniques, basic first aid, rescue techniques, babysitting as a business, and online and cellphone safety. 

Safe Sitters®learn:

  • How, why and where injuries happen so they can prevent them
  • How to decide the seriousness of an injury if it does happen
  • How to get help if needed
  • How to keep themselves safe when babysitting or at home alone
  • How a child’s age affects how to care for them
  • How to prevent problem behavior
  • How to rescue a choking infant or child
  • How to run a babysitting business
  • How to perform infant and child CPR

To successfully complete the Safe Sitter®program, students must pass a practical and written test to show that they have mastered the key concepts and have the skills necessary to handle an emergency.

Students must be at least 11 years old.  Pre-registration and pre-payment is required, enrollment is limited. Students need to bring a brown-bag lunch and drink to class. Scholarships are available based on financial need. If interested in registering for the class, download the registration form and student contract.
