Internal Medicine Physicians Internists provide comprehensive primary care for adult patients. They provide a wide range of nonsurgical health care services, including physical examinations, preventive screenings and medicine services, treatment of acute problems along with monitoring and treatment of chronic diseases. Internists provide referrals to surgical specialists when appropriately needed. 
 
Internal medicine generally falls into these nine recognized subspecialties: cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology, oncology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, hematology, rheumatology, and infectious disease.
