The Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital

What is a Children's Hospital?

The name "Children's Hospital" is an earned recognition.  The Hackensack University Medical Center Department of Pediatrics elected to meet the standards of pediatric healthcare as defined by the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutes and the State of New Jersey.  As a designated children's hospital, The Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital provides comprehensive medical and surgical pediatric care in more than 30 specialties, all integrated within a state-of-the-art child-focused facility.

Children's hospitals also actively participate in training and research.  The Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital is a major teaching affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School in Newark.  Medical students from the medical school rotate throughout our hospital as part of their education.  We also operate a pediatric residency program in affiliation with UMDNJ and St. George University.

As a children's hospital, we also advocate for the protection of children, with public health initiatives that include community immunizations, child-abuse and school violence prevention programs, and community education about pertinent and timely healthcare topics.

Our Unique Facilities

At the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital, our soothing, patient-focused environment embraces the needs of children from birth through adolescence and into young adulthood.  A modern facility with children’s play and family kitchen areas, our Children’s Hospital features private inpatient rooms with computers, Internet access, and flat-screen plasma televisions.  Parents are encouraged to take part in their children’s treatment and hospitalization and are welcome to stay overnight.

The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital was planned and designed to be a “green” hospital.  In building this facility and carrying out our life-saving work every day, we use green materials and supplies and non-toxic cleaning products.  We aim to reduce our patients’ exposure to risky environmental exposures that can lead to illness and disease.  We’re proud that Hackensack University Medical Center has been nominated “One of America’s Top 10 Green Hospitals” by Green Guide.

Accreditations and Distinctions

A true children’s hospital must be designated as one.  The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital is designated by the State of New Jersey as a children’s hospital.  We are also one of a select group designated a full institutional member of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions.  This designation honors the contributions of a dedicated team of  healthcare professionals, staff and volunteers who have made the children’s hospital a special place for children and their families for many years.  More significantly, this designation builds on that commitment of care for children that Hackensack University Medical Center has always provided.

The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital has also been selected by U.S. News and World Report's 2011-2012 Best Children's Hospitals ranked in Top 50 for Neurology and Neurosurgery and by Child magazine as one of the top 25 children’s hospitals in the United States and the top-ranked children’s hospital in New Jersey.  Hackensack University Medical Center is accredited by The Joint Commission, the nation’s leading authority for hospitals and healthcare organizations.  The medical center holds a number of distinctions, including The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for health care quality and the Magnet Award for nursing excellence to name a few.
