What About the Emergency Room?

How do I request transfusion-free care in an emergency situation?

If you should ever need emergency care at HackensackUMC, a verbal request for bloodless medicine practices will be understood by the ER staff since they have been trained to respond accordingly. However, just in case you are involved in an accident that would prevent you from speaking, make sure that your family and friends know of your wishes and that you always carry your medical directive card.

If you already are registered at the Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery, your medical directive will be held on file at the medical center and can be accessed in any emergency situation by stating your wishes to ER personnel. A registered nurse is available around the clock, seven days a week to assist you in matters relating to your transfusion-free care. The office number is 551-996-2963. The 24-hour pager number is 201-495-5818.

In addition, each patient being admitted through the Emergency room will be asked if they refuse transfusions.  If the answer is yes, the nurse on call will be paged.
