Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction

Thanks to recent advances in medicine and technology, the vast majority of men suffering from erectile dysfunction can now enjoy considerable improvement in their condition. At the Center for Sexual Health and Fertility, our chief, David Shin, M.D., and his staff are dedicated to providing you with the advanced treatment you need and the privacy you deserve.

Our comprehensive array of services includes:

Diagnostic tests:

  • Health and lifestyle evaluation – a comprehensive assessment of impotence begins with an evaluation of:
    • Erectile tendencies – what time of day the patient experiences erections and the degree of rigidity
    • Health habits – practices that may contribute to your condition, such as smoking, drinking, and medication use
    • Relationship issues
  • Physical examination – your physician will conduct an examination of the genital area to detect any problems that may be the source of the disorder
  • Comprehensive medical testing – your doctor may also order additional tests to pinpoint any underlying condition that may cause or contribute to erectile dysfunction, such as abnormal liver or thyroid function, hormonal problems, or high cholesterol. Tests include state-of-the-art Doppler ultrasound, urinalysis, and blood tests.

Treatments:

  • Medication – Phosphodiesterase inhibitors have revolutionized treatment of the disorder, aiding approximately 60 percent of men to varying degrees.
  • Injections - medications containing alprostadil, a synthetic version of a naturally occurring substance, can be injected by the patient into the side of the penis or into the urethral opening to increase blood flow and make the penis erect.
  • Vacuum devices – these devices fit over the penis and suction air away to create vacuum pressure that increases blood flow to cause an erection.
  • Surgery - improvements in design and biotechnology have dramatically changed the field of penile prosthesis surgery. Penile devices may now be implanted in an outpatient setting in many cases, and various studies report patient satisfaction rates in excess of 93 percent.
