As women’s bodies change due to age and/or childbirth, the muscles and ligaments in the pelvic floor can weaken or stretch, causing the bladder, uterus or rectum to prolapse, or slip out of position.
Prolapse is a common condition, but the signs and symptoms can be worrisome, uncomfortable and often embarrassing. The urologists at Hackensack University Medical Center—two of whom are women—provide you with caring and compassionate treatment in a private setting.
This program offers high-level, subspecialty training to surgeons who have completed their residency in urology or gynecology.
We take the time to explain your condition and create an individual treatment plan tailored for you. We offer a range of treatment options, from physical therapy to pessary fitting to reconstructive surgery, all designed to restore physical comfort and peace of mind.
Prolapse Diagnosis and Treatment
If you think you may be experiencing prolapse of your uterus, bladder or rectum, don’t wait to get help. The experienced urologists at HackensackUMC are well-versed in the latest, most effective treatment options for all types of prolapse. After conducting a thorough exam, our specialists will determine the right treatment option for you.
Pelvic Floor Exercises
If you are experiencing mild prolapse, your doctor may recommend special exercises to help you strengthen the muscles of your pelvic floor. If you choose this course of treatment, HackensackUMC’s specially trained nurses or physical therapists will teach you the proper exercises and monitor your progress.
If you are experiencing any form of prolapse, your doctor may recommend an in-office pessary fitting. A pessary is a device fitted in your vagina that supports the uterus or other pelvic organs. This nonsurgical, minimally invasive approach to treating prolapse requires ongoing maintenance performed either at home or in the doctor’s office.
If you are experiencing moderate to severe prolapse, your doctor may recommend surgery to reconstruct your pelvic floor. Our urologists perform expert, state-of-the-art reconstructive surgery using native tissues, mesh or biological materials to provide support to your uterus, bladder or rectum. This can be done transvaginally or with the assistance of the da Vinci® robot. Occasionally, a hysterectomy may be performed at the same time. We use only the safest, most advanced materials and techniques.
