Pascack Valley

HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley

Pascack Valley Hospital served the communities of Pascack Valley and Northern Valley for over 50 years. In 2007, the hospital closed due to financial mismanagement, despite the continued demand of residents for a community hospital providing top quality care close to home. Immediately, Hackensack University Medical Center took over the Mobile Intensive Care Units to provide residents a seamless transition of emergency responder care. In 2008, the medical center opened a Satellite Emergency Department providing quality, convenient emergency care for the Pascack and Northern Valley regions. The Satellite Emergency Department, nevertheless, was not sufficient to meet the comprehensive healthcare needs of the residents of the Pascack Valley and Northern Valley regions.

In February 2012 the state approved HackensackUMC to reopen the hospital in Westwood. HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley will be a 128-bed, full-service, acute-care community hospital, providing the same nationally recognized quality care for which Hackensack University Medical Center is known. The hospital will feature all private patient rooms, a state-of-the-art obstetrical unit, an intensive/critical care unit, five operating rooms, one special procedure room, and a cardiac catheterization laboratory. This inpatient hospital will act as an anchor to many in-demand, outpatient services such as radiology, women’s health and same-day surgery.

The reopening of the hospital will create jobs and deliver high quality healthcare close to home. Specifically, the hospital will:

  • Extend a network of some of the best healthcare services in America to Pascack Valley communities
  • Ease capacity problems for hospitals in Bergen County, two of which consistently rank among the highest occupancy in the state, and are unable to accommodate patient overflow
  • Improve critical travel times for ambulances and mobile intensive care units, which more than doubled in the region after Pascack Valley Hospital closed
  • Create hundreds of temporary jobs in the construction industry, as well as hundreds of permanent local jobs at the hospital
  • Revitalize the region’s economy by bringing back physician offices to the region
    • Each physician’s office will generate an average of $1.5 million in annual revenue
    • Each practice will generate approximately $12 million in indirect revenue to purchase supplies, lease equipment, rent space, etc.
  • Improve physician shortages in New Jersey by adding residency slots in key specialties such as emergency medicine, family medicine, OB/GYN and general surgery
