Hackensack University Medical Center has once again been ranked as the number one hospital in New Jersey in the annual U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitalsrankings. The medical center received 11 national rankings – more than any other hospital in New Jersey - and ranked among the top 30 hospitals in the nation; clearly marking an annual trend of improved recognition for HackensackUMC. In the 2011-12 Best Hospitals list, the medical center received three national rankings and was among the top eight New York Metro Hospitals. Since then, HackensackUMC has steadily increased its national rankings, was listed among the top three New York Metro Hospitals, and is currently one of just 30 hospitals in the nation (less than one percent) to have 10 or more national specialty rankings.

“HackensackUMC is tremendously proud to be considered the best hospital in New Jersey and one of the top hospitals in the nation,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer of the Hackensack University Health Network. “Our team remains dedicated to patient-centered, specialized care across a broad spectrum of practice areas, and our newest specialty ranking is a clear reflection of this commitment. I commend our entire medical team for demonstrating the type of healthcare that is recognized on a national level, and I applaud our team for their dedication to providing world-class care.”

The annual U.S. News Best Hospitalsrankings, now in their 25th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients. For 2014-15, U.S. News evaluated hospitals in 16 adult specialties and HackensackUMC ranked in the top 50 in most of the specialties. Just three percent of the nearly 5,000 hospitals that were analyzed for Best Hospitals 2014-15 earned national ranking in even one specialty.

HackensackUMC received national rankings in the following specialties: Neurology and Neurosurgery in the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital, Cancer, Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Diabetes & Endocrinology (new), Ear, Nose & Throat, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Geriatrics, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Pulmonology, and Urology. The medical center was also listed as high-performing in the New York metro area in Gynecology and Nephrology.

U.S. Newsalso recognizes hospitals that perform nearly at the level of their nationally ranked peers and represent valuable regional sources of quality care.

“The data tell the story – a hospital that emerged from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of,” says U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. “A Best Hospital has demonstrated its expertise in treating the most challenging patients.”

U.S. Newspublishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition or extra risk because of age or multiple health problems. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties.

The specialty rankings and data were produced for U.S. News by RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Using the same data, U.S. News produced the state and metro rankings.
