Weighing the risks of long-distance running

The death of 65-year-old New Jersey marathon champion Tom Fleming this week raised anew questions about whether endurance athletes face the danger of having heart problems as they get older. Some studies have suggested that punishing amounts of exercise over time can cause a buildup of scar tissue on the heart and have linked participation in endurance athletic events to atrial fibrillation.
