Emergency Medicine Post Graduate Year 2
The Hackensack University Medical Center Pharmacy Residency Program – Emergency Medicine Post Graduate Year 2 (PGY2) is an ASHP accredited 12-month program.
Located just 8 miles west of Manhattan, Hackensack University Medical Center is a nonprofit teaching and research hospital that is the largest provider of healthcare services in the state of New Jersey with 775 inpatient beds. It is a Level-2 Emergency trauma center that sees over 111,000 patients per year and admits 1,283 trauma patients per year from the ED. An additional 34,000 patients visit the Pediatric Emergency Department annually. It is also a Stroke Center and a STEMI catherization center with full cardiothoracic surgical capabilities.
The programs primary goal is to offer advanced training in Emergency Medicine pharmacy with an emphasis on the following areas:
- Assessment and evaluation of the pharmacological treatment of patients presenting to the ED
- Development and enhancement of teaching skills through didactic and experiential teaching of Doctor of Pharmacy students
- Development and enhancement of written and oral communication skills
- Development of research skills

The resident is required to be the primary preceptor for a minimum of 2 APPE students.
Didactic
There may be opportunities to teach in both small group and large lecture hall settings. Formal conference lectures for the Emergency Medicine Residents are also required.
Teaching Certificate
Opportunity to earn a teaching certificate at Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy.
Responsibilities
Though certain responsibilities of the resident are required, the program has the flexibility to develop activities consistent with the resident’s background and career goals. In general, the resident’s responsibilities include:
- Perform daily patient care activities at Hackensack University Medical Center and make appropriate recommendations to interdisciplinary treatment teams
- Design, monitor, and evaluate treatment goals for Emergency Department patients that consider patient-, disease-, and drug-specific information and ethical considerations
- Present educational in-services on pharmacy topics to patients, pharmacy staff, and interdisciplinary treatment team
- Supervise pharmacy students on clerkship
- Complete a research project, as well as present this research at a conference

Benefits
Residents receive a comprehensive benefits package from Hackensack University Medical Center. The resident will have on-site parking, lab coat, and meal card support. Financial support is provided for residents to attend ASHP’s Midyear Clinical Meeting and the Eastern States Residency Conference. Financial support may be provided for additional educational conferences as deemed necessary by the residency advisory committee.

Application Requirements:
Applicants should hold a Pharm.D. degree, be licensed (or eligible for licensure) in New Jersey, and possess good communication and interpersonal skills. PGY1 pharmacy residency from an ASHP accredited program is required. The position is available beginning July 1st for a 12 month appointment
