NICU Transport Services
Welcome to The Regional Perinatal Center
A Transport Letter to Mothers
Our highly skilled medical and nursing staff looks forward to working with you in providing all of the specialized services your child now needs.
In the future, once your baby has become more stable and needs fewer of these highly specialized services, he/she may be transferred back to their home hospital closer to you for further growth and continuation of medical care at one of our Affiliated-Hospitals. This will of course require your approval as well as clearance from your health insurance provider. However, at either our affiliate hospital or here at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center, your baby will be ready to go home when he/she is able to:
- Gain weight in an open crib
- Maintain normal body temperature in an open crib
- Take all feedings from breast or bottle by nippling
- No longer has significant apnea of prematurity (with or without the help of medication)
- Has no other active medical problems requiring hospitalization
Our Affiliated-Hospital Nursery medical and nursing staff are members of a network of experts working with The Regional Neonatal Center of Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center in order to coordinate health resources in providing the best medical care for babies like yours. Our goal is to provide those services to you and your family in the most appropriate medical environment closest to your home.
As your baby begins to achieve the above milestones, please ask us when it is time for your baby to be transported back to an affiliated hospital closer to your home.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask our nursing staff or a member from the medical team.

Why is my baby being transferred?
Your baby is being transferred because he or she requires more intense, and specialized care than your current hospital can provide.
Who can come along?
Parents are not permitted to ride along with their baby during transport. Directions to Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital are provided and you can follow behind. Instructions on where to park once you arrive are provided.
Will my baby be safe during transport?
The transport team will work closely with the neonatal team at your hospital to ensure that your baby is in the best condition possible before transfer.
