What is physiatry?
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is also called physiatry. This medical specialty evaluates and treats patients with a disease, disorder, or injury that impairs normal function. Interventions are directed toward improving independence, strength, mobility, and comfort to help you return to what activities matter most to you.
What is a physiatrist?
Physiatrists are doctors who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Physiatrists complete 4 years of medical school followed by 4 years of residency training. Many physiatrists complete fellowship training in a specialty area and then take tests to become a board-certified physiatrist through the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
They provide non-surgical treatment of various musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, and pulmonary disorders. Some conditions include arthritis, back pain, sports-related injury, amputee care, spinal cord injury, brain injury, and lymphedema. Physiatrists direct multidisciplinary care with team members consisting of physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, orthotists, or prostheticians. This team works closely with each other and you to achieve your goals. Care may include, but is not limited to, exercise planning and counseling, prosthetic and orthotic consult and fitting, and interventions for non-surgical pain management.
